In my stocking each year at Christmas, there are scratch-off tickets. This is probably my favorite part of Christmas because as silly as it sounds, I feel like I am holding hope. Everything could change as quickly as I can find a penny to reveal the prizes underneath. And this, my friends, is life! The biggest thing that has ever happened to you could happen today. How can you not be excited?

In Hollywood, sometimes people get their own shows. Those shows need theme songs. This is just such a theme song tailor made for just such a show. The show is based on a super busy, semi-famous couple trying to make their romance work while flying cross-country to see one another. They’re adorable, the show is entertaining, but the theme song kicks ass.

Ever Alive

Per the recommendation of a girlfriend, I read the Twilight series…in a day and a night. What can I say? They’re catchy. You have to admit that whole romantic concept of being undead with your soul mate for eternity is kinda hot. So while this parallels their plot, it makes sense for anyone who has ever felt like having been in love is the single proof of having truly been alive.

Meet the Jones

A different take on the classic concept of “The Jones”. Instead of manicured lawns and 2-car garages, this song goes behind the department store curtains to peek at the extra marital affairs and drug habits of the seemingly “have it all” fam next door. No family is perfect, right?

This is the song playing in the background of the scene where our main character is walking home alone on a snowy evening and catches a glimpse of a holiday party through a frost covered window. We see reunions under mistletoe, caroling around the piano and all of this from the silence of an outside in perspective. It is happy and sad, winter and warmth and when the music fades you’ll suddenly crave hot cocoa.

You know those optical illusion books full of multiple images and frustration? Okay, so maybe I’m the only person who ever became frustrated by them, but sometimes when you have a certain picture in your head it’s hard to see it any other way. And it’s been there in front of your face the whole time but you were too close to see it. And it’s not just pictures, it’s people, too. Sometimes, you’re too close to really see them even though they’ve been right there all along.

It’s a big decision. A hard decision. And you can almost hear the clock taunting you stealing your clarity with every tick. So, you over think it with the countdown going on as background music in your head. Tick, tick, tick, tick. And the longer it takes, the longer it takes. Seconds feel like hours. Everything around you is a distraction. It shouldn’t be this hard but it is nonetheless. And when the clock runs out, your Jeopardy board is still blank. Dammit.

My best friend’s niece is in the seventh grade. She walked into the house one afternoon completely exasperated with this girl at her school and told me, “She’s just such a Dramabomb!” I had never met this girl, but suddenly I knew her. I knew how she dressed, how she talked, how she popped her bubblegum. Everyone knows this girl. Some of us hated her. Some of us were her. And just like the gossip she lives to spread, this track is completely infectious.

My mom has this saying: “Act like a lady or don’t you do impersonations?”. She overuses it and thinks it’s funny every time. It’s not. I’ve never heard her use a real cuss word and despite her efforts with soap when I was younger, being on the road for years gave me a bit of a potty mouth. So, when my mom hears me slip in front of her she immediately scolds me–”Julie Ann! Don’t talk like a sailor!” I think it’s funny every time. And that inspired this quirky, Fiona-esque piano tune.
